The United States needs to support the protesters in Cuba and put pressure on the local government. This was stated by former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview with Fox News.
Pompeo stressed that the protesters in Cuba took to the streets, demanding freedoms. “They know that the life of the next generation of their families will not be better. (…) They know that things are not going well. The criminal leadership of the country and the communist dictatorship of this leadership have ruined their lives, ” he said.
The former diplomat called on the new US administration led by Joe Biden to support the protests. “This is an important opportunity for the Cuban people. The American people must take their side. We can do a lot to help them find the very freedom they demand on the streets, putting themselves at great personal risk. We must be with the Cuban people,” Pompeo said. He stressed that the protests, along with pressure on the Cuban leadership, can lead to a “favorable outcome” not only for Cuba itself, but also for the security of the United States.
Earlier it became known that the Cuban authorities declared a state of emergency in the country amid mass protests against the ruling Communist Party, which broke out for the first time in many years. Opponents of the current government demand free elections and more decisive actions to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Against the background of the actions, troops and additional units of the security forces were brought into the capital of the country.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called on supporters of the authorities to also take to street demonstrations. He said that he would not allow the situation in the country to be destabilized.
